Experience and enjoy nature
experience nature in the Rauriser valley with all its side valleys. Here you'll find the largest and most beautiful hiking area of the national park Hohe Tauern. High alpine hiking or relaxed meadow walks, there's suitable terrain for all.

Besides gold washing the primaeval forest and the valley of the vultures are unique in the Rauriser valley. Besides hiking, one can also experience nature by mountain bike or horse back. More than once a week tours are organized.

In the valley of the vultures
One of the largest vultures, the Beard Vulture, finds its home in the Krumml valley. Once this most beautiful art of vulture with a wingspan of 2,9 meters was a widely spread breeding bird in the alpine regions. However hundreds of years ago they became extinct in the alpine region.

Since 1986 WWF-International helps to try to re-integrate the Beard vulture in the Hohe Tauern national park. The birds carry a small transmitter at their backs and therefore, for a certain amount of time they can be tracked by radio signal. In the framework of a nature adventure and learning trail, guided groups can monitor these large birds.

Discover the unique beauty of the 'Kitzloch' canyon at the beginning of the Rauriser valley in Taxenbach. Or climb the High Sonnblick and visit the weather observatory. The 'Hochalmhütte' accessible by lift presents during the whole summer season an unforgettable attack-bird show. In the hamlet of Bucheben you'll find a traditional schnaps distillery combined with a small mountain wildlife zoo. In the Seidlwinkel valley at the Weixen restaurant you can fish and catch your own trout and have them prepare it for you.

Bird show

with the 'Rauriser Hochalmbahnen' cable car lift you reach the bird show at the 'Hochalm' within a few minutes. The normally very shy owls, stone eagles and falcons are presented here from very nearby in the impressive setting of the national park. In the approximately forty minute show you are informed about the life and habits of these birds of which some are threatened with extinction.

The primeaeval-forest trail

this forest has been created 800 years ago by an earth shock that made a mountain range collapse. It isolated a small region that now outlines a very special forest with more than 80 small marshes and hundreds of years old trees. It appears as a fairytale forest where Lord of the Rings or Narnia could easily have been filmed. It fascinates every visitor and children not in the least. A small museum in the forest informs about the geological creation and about the plants and animals that live in the forest.

Start:

Kolm Saigurn Lenzanger to Ammererhof (at 1628 meters above sea level). From Ammererhof follow the 'Wirtschaftsweg' in the direction of 'Durchgangsalm' until the learning trail sign of the forest;

Duration:

1,5 to 2 hours, very family friendly terrain.

Wildlife zoo
To be able to look in the eyes of a dear, mountain goat or Capricorn is a very special feeling. Go and visit the beautifully situated wildlife zoo from 'Kirchewirt' in Bucheben, opened through the year with adjacent the schnaps distillery where you are welcome to visit and taste this typical Austrian specialty.
