History of gold

The village of Rauris is in ground surface largest of the pro-vince of Salzburg and has more beds for guests than it has inhabitants. Historical findings prove the valley had settlements already for four thousand years. The valley of Rauris however has gained most publicity due to its golden history. The famous Tauern gold was already popular by the Romans that used it for their coins.

Ignaz Rojacher
Because of Ignaz Rojacher (1844-1891), the official owner of all Rauriser gold mining sites, Rauris was not only fitted with electricity in a very early stage but he also forced some commercial laws, telephone connection, mail service and probably his biggest success, the until today highest weather and climate research observatory at the Hohen Sonnblick (3105 m).

Gold fever
700 a.d. the first official community in the valley was

icreated, the gold mining settlement of Kolm-Saigurn at the far end of the valley. In the period from 1460 to 1560, at the high times of the Rauriser gold mining, ten percent of the world gold stock was won in Rauris. Therefore it was the centre of the provinces gold winning. The old craft men's houses with their gothic arches are the silent proof of those flourishing times.

Let's go Gold washing!!
Exact like in the old days, today you can still try your luck at one of the three gold washing places in the valley. With the right technique and the competent instructions and help of the province gold washing champion Sepp Halinger you are almost sure to have a lucky find. Nowadays the gold washing is not only popular as a tourist attraction, every year there's a championship and in the summer of 2007 the European championships were held in Rauris.
